Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism

The Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Medicine Section based at the St Mary's campus in Paddington is headed by Professor Desmond Johnston. The section has a wide range of research interests and has built a network of associations with other research bodies locally and internationally.


Research areas include:

    • Cardiovascular risk
    • Complications of pregnancy
    • Osteoporosis
    • Pituitary disease
    • Type 2 diabetes
    • Continuous Glucose sensor for Type 1 diabetes
    • Clinical Evaluation of an Artificial Pancreas in people with Type 1 Diabetes
    • Using mobile technology to promote lifestyle changes to prevent Type 2 diabetes


The Endocrine and General Medicine services at St Mary’s Hospital are run by the Imperial College Healthcare Trust and take place in the Mint Wing. They include:

  • Weekly Endocrine Clinics
  • Weekly Diabetes Clinics
  • Weekly Joint Obstetric Clinics
  • Dedicated Metabolic Day Ward and Diabetes Centre
  • Chemical Pathology department
