Master's Courses for AHPs, Nurses, Midwives and Pharmacists
MRes in Translational Medicine
The MRes in Translational Medicine is a full-time/part-time course, with a three-month lecture programme followed by a nine-month research phase. This innovative MRes programme capitalises on the excellence in experimental medicine and clinical research at Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. The aim of the course is to equip clinicians and basic scientists with an understanding of the technology and proceedings involved in clinical research. Knowing the opportunities and limitations of the technology, students will understand how it can be deployed to address a clinical question in a clinical research protocol. Eminent investigators from academia and industry with diverse backgrounds from systems biology through clinical pharmacoimaging to specific medical disciplines (cardiovascular/respiratory, neurology/psychiatry and oncology/metabolic medicine) will provide guidance on a variety of topics embraced by Translational Medicine in plenary sessions, seminars and networking. Basic and clinical research infrastructure provide an excellent environment for advanced hands-on training in the theoretical and practical aspects of clinical research .
MSc in Infection Management for Pharmacists
The MSc in Infection Management for Pharmacists is a part-time, two-year course organised by the Department of Infectious Diseases and Immunity in conjunction with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and the Health Protection Agency. The primary objective of the course is to promote the role of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists nationally and so enhance prudent antimicrobial prescribing and tackle the problems of resistance. The academic links and valuable health services research expertise of the Academic Pharmacy Unit and Health Protection Agency, together with Hammersmith's international reputation for clinical research, offering a potentially unparalleled range of lecturers for those attending the course. As such, graduates of the course can expect to have obtained a full understanding of key issues surrounding the management of infection today.
MRes in Clinical Research Design and Management
This course is a part-time, two-year course and it aims to create a pathway into clinical research for nurses, midwives and allied healthcare professionals so that they can design and implement clinical research. The course provides a structured approach to developing the additional skills that required to assist in the management of an existing clinical portfolio, develop one's own research portfolio and independently manage research projects. At the end of the course students will be equipped to pursue careers in clinical research in the NHS, Academia or Industry, or to undertake employment as Clinical Trial Coordinators, Clinical Research Associates or Experimental Medicine Nurses in Research and Development. There is an expectation that a number of students will go on to pursue PhD programmes and eventually establish academic careers.
PLEASE NOTE!!! Deadline for applications to the MRes in Clinical Research, Design, and Management course is 15th July 2009.
Interview date: late July.
All prospective applicants who do not hold a first degree should email Chris Harris c.harris@imperial.ac.uk (ideally by end of June)
MSc in Quality and Safety in Healthcare The MSc in Quality and Safety in Healthcare offers a sound theoretical background to the principles of clinical risk management, quality improvement and patient safety. We provide rigorous academic training, practical experience in safety and quality improvement, an introduction to appropriate research methods and the opportunity for intellectual development within a stimulating and supportive environment. By the end of the programme, students will have enhanced their understanding of quality and safety related to their discipline, working practice and healthcare in general, and have developed skills in the use of computing and statistics applied to healthcare.
Master of Public Health This course is available full-time or part-time, and will enable students to design, analyse, interpret and evaluate/criticise epidemiological and biomedical research; demonstrate an understanding of the essential principles of modern biostatistical methods; apply current research methods in key areas such as meta-analysis, genetic and spatial epidemiology, environmental exposure assessment and health economics; Demonstrate skills in needs assessment and healthcare evaluation; demonstrate competence in project management; have skills and knowledge in critical areas of preventable population health risk including child health, communicable diseases, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and others.
MSc in Preventive Cardiology This course is available full-time over one year or part-time over two years. It is aimed at healthcare professionals with a role in prevention of cardiovascular disease, such as physicians, nurses, dietitians, physiotherapists, physical activity specialists, sports scientists, pharmacists, psychologists or occupational therapists. The course aims to establish a strong research foundation in practical application of research methods and statistics to preventive cardiology. You will gain knowledge of, and experience in, the theory and clinical application of evidence-based preventive cardiology practice. The programme covers the complete spectrum of preventive cardiology, from patients with established atherosclerotic disease and the relatives of patients with premature atherosclerotic disease, to asymptomatic people, including those with diabetes, who are at high multifactorial risk.
MEd in Surgical Education The MEd is a one year full-time or two years part-time course. It offers a sound theoretical background to the principles of surgical education, a rigorous academic training, an introduction to appropriate research methods and practice, and the opportunity for intellectual growth and development within a challenging, stimulating yet supportive environment. The programme develops new areas of teaching to reflect contemporary research and scholarship, and ensures that the themes of surgery and education are always linked. It aims to attract highly motivated UK and overseas students who are seeking a good basis from which to assume more responsibility and take on a leadership role in this rapidly growing field (in deaneries, surgical colleges, school of surgery, universities or hospitals), and those who intend to go on and study for a PhD.
MRes in Biomedical Research The MRes in Biomedical Research is a one year full-time postgraduate course providing high quality academic and research training. The course offers students the opportunity to undertake research training with experienced teaching staff in one of the world's leading biomedical research institutions. The faculty are internationally respected scientists with research groups working at the cutting edge of biomedical science research. A very high proportion of students are likely to go on to study for a PhD, or to take research positions in industry or within scientific government departments. The emphasis is on a research-oriented approach to biomedical science and comprises both theoretical and practical elements. The course embraces cutting edge developments in the field and by way of two mini research projects.
