Newsletter - Celebrating Integrated Success

We could blog and Twitter (maybe one day we'll invent a new medium) but we have decided to stick with the tried and tested device of communicating key messages and successes in one epistle. At least we aren't using pigeons.

Always the optimist, the glass is half-full as Prof Wilkins celebrates integrated success.

Professor Martin Wilkins, Head of Experimental Medicine

The Division of Experimental Medicine is one of the larger Divisions of the Department of Medicine with over 75 core-funded staff.

Professor Martin Wilkins is Head of Experimental Medicine and the Director of CPG-6.

Our Centres

Centre for Neuroscience

The CentreGraft for Neuroscience is led by Professor David Brooks, and consists of the Wolfson Neuroscience Laboratories at the Hammersmith Hospital (HH) campus, High Dependancy Stroke Unit, Movement and Balance Unit, Deep Brain Stimulation and Clinical trials at the Charing Cross (CX) campus, and Neuroimaging groups based in Cyclotron Building (PET scanning) and on floor 3 of the Burlington Danes building (Computational, Cognitive and Clinical Neuroimaging Laboratory (C3NL)) at the Hammersmith campus.

Centre for Haematology

Acute Leukaemia - Professor Bain imagesThe Centre for Haemotology is led by Professor Jane Apperley, and is based mainly on the Hammersmith Campus. The research interests span a wide range, as is appropriate to a relatively large group; they include:

  • leukaemia, especially chronic myeloid leukaemia
  • lymphoma
  • myeloma
  • abnormalities of fetal haematology
  • haemophilia
  • thrombophilia

Drug Discovery Centre

Drug Disc CentreThe Drug Discovery Centre is a cross-faculty resource, hosted by Medicine and based in the Biochemistry building at South Kensington. The mission is to translate the wealth of Imperial’s healthcare-related research into drug discovery projects and ultimately new medicines.

Centre for Pharmacology and TherapeuticsRat

The Centre for Pharmacology and Therapeutics is led by Professor Martin Wilkins and comprises three units: Acute Medicine, Neuropsychopharmacology, and Pharmacology and Therapeutics. It is based mainly on the 5th floor of the Burlington Danes building, Hammersmith Hospital.

Centre for Pathology

Degranulation of eosinophils (pink) with adjacent nerves (brown) in the duodenum of a patient with functional dyspepsiaHistopathology, the study of disease in tissue, provides a visual aspect to translational medicine by investigating cell-cell interaction within tissue sections by H&E sections and immunohistochemistry to identify cellular detail.

Centre for Mental Health

The Centre for Mental Health is led by Professor Allan Young. Our work is principally focused on psychosis and personality disorder and topics common to both, such as substance use. A wide range of research methods are used including randomised clinical trials, large longitudinal studies, epidemiological approaches, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and neuroimaging

Sir John McMichael Centre

The Sir John McMichael Centre is a dedicated early phase clinical studies unit on the Hammersmith campus.

Clinical Programme Group 6 (CPG6)

The Division of Experimental Medicine maps onto Clinical Programme Group 6 (CPG6) – Clinical and Investigative Sciences – within the NHS Trust. Its mission is to facilitate translational medicine.

As such it takes clinical and scientific responsibility for the Sir John McMichael Centre. The Division co-ordinates the resources of CPG6, namely Imaging, Molecular Pathology, Pharmacy, Clinical Trial Methodology and Research Governance, to form a Centre for Translational Medicine.

Research Activities

There are a wide range of research activities within the Division, covering cardiovascular medicine, neuroscience, both clinical and molecular, psychological medicine, haematology, pathology and experimental physiology. The unifying theme, however, is Translational Medicine and the composition of the Division and its close association with CPG6 within the Trust provide access to the tools – Imaging, Pathology etc – that permit informative studies in humans.

Teaching Activities

The Department is responsible for the Wellcome Trust/GSK Translational Medicine Training Fellowship Programme, and the Masters in Research programme (MRes) Clinical Research which consists of three distinct pathways: MRes in Translational Medicine, MRes in Clinical Research Design and Management and MRes in Cellular Pathology.
