Welcome to the website of the Academic Department of Psychological Medicine. The Department is a leading centre for research and teaching in psychiatry. The research activity is supported by substantial external funding, and involves collaborations with a number of other investigators within and outside Imperial College. Our work is principally focused on psychosis and personality disorder and topics common to both, such as substance use. A wide range of research methods are used including randomised clinical trials, large longitudinal studies, epidemiological approaches, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and neuroimaging.
Key areas of research include:
- The assessment, evaluation and treatment of personality disorders, including the new variant, dangerous and severe personality disorder
- The assessment and treatment of psychosis, including clinical and neuropsychological aspects of first-onset psychosis
- Treatment of alcohol and non-alcohol substance use
- Childhood and adolescent psychiatric disorders with special reference to chronic fatigue and paediatric liaison, and cultural and ethnic aspects
- Development of novel pharmacological agents for dementia
- In partnership with our NHS colleagues, we provide undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in psychiatry and host the MRCPsych course for postgraduate psychiatric training
