Showcase Hospitals Programme
Under the showcase programme eight trusts in the country were selected to test a range of new healthcare-associated infection (HCAI) technologies.
The eight 'showcase' trusts focus on the in-use value of HCAI technologies, primarily evaluating products that are classified as category 1 by the Health Protection Agency's rapid review panel (RRP), which means the technologies should have benefits for NHS organisations.
Working with the NHS Technology Adoption Centre, we develop technical and economic business cases for each of the technologies. We gain invaluable knowledge about the practical aspects of using the products in real situations. We are then able to share our experiences, ranging from training needs and getting the products adopted, through to patient experiences.
The NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency (PASA) will then get expert feedback from the showcase trusts and work with the trusts' hospitals to make the most successful products more widely available.
Anthony Sewell is the Showcase Lead for Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. At Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, we have tested the effectiveness, practicality and patient experience of six new technologies that have been designed to reduce levels of infection, especially MRSA bloodstream infections and C. difficile.
Our showcase project manager, Anthony Sewell, said: "We are speeding up the time it takes for proven infection prevention technologies to be introduced into a healthcare setting. While our patients will be the first to benefit, the work we are doing will enable hospitals across the country to fight infections like MRSA and C. diff more effectively."
The showcase program being part of the HCAI technology program links with the Centre for Infection Prevention Management (CIPM) specifically to look at the aspects of adoption and diffusion of the technologies trialed to reduce HCAIs. The organization change mechanisms and processes for adoption and diffusion for HCAI technology overlaps current aims and research within the centre to review and speed up these processors.
