CIPM work-stream lead Shiranee Sriskandan has been awarded a two year grant with her collaborators at the Health Protection Agency including Androula Efstratiou, to develop in vivo and phenotypic assays in order to provide enhanced information on virulence of Group A Streptococcus

The study will examine strains from patients infected with this bacterium and will use new technologies to further our understanding of what makes the bacterium so dangerous and how can we identify these factors quickly. The programme of work will comprise several components and will involve key specialists (microbiologists, infectious disease specialists, molecular microbiologists, statisticians, epidemiologists, clinicians). It may also feed into the CIPM project being carried out by Neil Fairweather and Zoe Seagar.

The work will be supported by Baharak Afshar who will be working in the CIPM laboratories
