Professor Alison Holmes is co-director, with Professor Jon Friedland, of the Centre for Infection Prevention and Management. As an academic in Imperial College and the Director of Infection for the Trust, her overall vision for the Centre is to see it bridging the implementation gap between research and clinical practice and having a direct impact on patient care and NHS policy in the sphere of healthcare associated infection.

As well as co-directing the Centre, Alison is also directing work-stream 1(B) for the Centre looking at ‘Behavioural Science and Infection Control’ and co-directing Workstream 3 with Paul Aylin, which focuses on ‘Infection Surveillance’.

Her work in Workstream 1 examines the benefits of behavioural sciences and social marketing for producing sustainable change in infection control and antibiotic prescribing behaviours.  The work will provide a blue-print, of how to assess the effectiveness of existing communications and target new successful behaviour-change interventions, for use across the NHS.  In doing so, the research which is being carried out in partnership with Dr Foster Intelligence, aims to produce reduced infection rates and improved antibiotic stewardship.

Within workstream 3, Alison is working closely with Dr Paul Aylin in the development of infection surveillance schemes. Together they aim to improve the range, quality and sophistication of how current data used, to establish predictors of infection risk and develop better monitoring systems for at risk groups and prescribing practice, to better prevent and manage infection.
