His research uses neo-institutional and innovation diffusion theories to examine and model factors which influence the adoption and implementation of innovations. All innovations resulting from the other Centre work-streams will be used as case studies by the team, as they are introduced to the Trust.
The aim of this research is to develop a diagnostic toolbox and organisational guides which can be used across healthcare to analyse how well innovations are adopted. These systems-based models will then enable better organisational and managerial decisions to be taken to improve the process of adopting, implementing and sustaining best practice innovations.
As well as innovations coming from the Centre, the team are also conducting research with 10 NHS Trusts to see how they select and adopt technologies to combat Healthcare Associated Infection. The 10 selected Trust are all recipients of the NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency HCAI Technology Awards which were presented to those Trust which made a real contribution in combating infection over the past year. This work will focus on analysing the current organisational capacity and contextual circumstances in each Trust with respect to the decision making process associated with: (a) the organisational dynamics on the selection process of specific innovative technologies, and (b) the subsequent adoption and utilisation of the selected technologies for combating healthcare associated infections. As part of this project Yiannis has been liaising with Anthony Sewell, who is the programme manager for the Showcase Trust Programme http://www.imperial.nhs.uk/aboutus/news/news_013643
Yiannis is also the Head of the International Health Management Research Collaborative based the Centre and is developing a health services management research hub, which supports and drives applied and qualitative research in health service and programme issues, with a particular focus on delivery and implementation.
