Grahame Davis is a PhD student in Work-stream 3: Infection Surveillance. He is supervised by Dr's Lydia Drumright and Nick Sevdalis.
Grahame’s project is to investigate the application of spatial epidemiology to assist in the understanding of transmission of healthcare acquired infections (HCAI), caused by a number of bacteria and viruses. He is also attempting to identify new methods for their prevention and will carry out a comprehensive literature review of the known spatial and temporal epidemiology of HCAI to highlight any gaps in the knowledge.
He is also identifying the most appropriate methods for analysis of hospital and surveillance data, creation of a pilot intervention which utilises GIS software to visualise the occurrence of HCAIs to staff to enable visualization of HCAIs within their routine clinical practice.
Grahame's project utilises spatial epidemiology to visualise the tempo-spatial distribution of HCAIs within the Imperial College NHS Healthcare Trust (ICHT) and the local community. He is applying selected methods to data currently available within the ICHT to identify behavioural, structural and environmental factors associated with their occurrence in patients and staff.
The project also involves the creation of a pilot intervention which utilises GIS software to visualise the occurrence of HCAIs to staff to enable visualization of HCAIs within their routine clinical practice.
Northern Health and Social Care Trust in Northern Ireland. At this time he undertook a distance learning course ‘Control of Infectious Diseases’ from the University of London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).

Background
Grahame received his BSc Microbiology from Queen’s University Belfast in 2006. Prior to beginning his Masters degree, Grahame worked as a Medical Laboratory Assistant in a Clinical Biochemistry at Antrim Area Hospital within the
In 2009, Grahame went on to study for his Masters in Public Health in the Control of Infectious Diseases at LSHTM, where he studied Epidemiology, Control of Communicable Diseases, and Spatial Epidemiology. His thesis dissertation project focused on utilisation of spatial epidemiology techniques to map the locations of breeding sites for Anopheles mosquitoes and analyse environmental parameters associated with their presence in Kenya. Grahame plans to utilise and build upon the techniques he has learned in spatial epidemiology to monitor the distribution of HCAIs within a hospital setting and develop innovative new methods to prevent HCAIs
