Department of Infectious Diseases and Immunity: Clinical Training at Hammersmith
The clinical academic team is closely involved with the delivery of infectious diseases training. There are two SpR's on the North Thames Training Programme in ID and Medicine. One SpR at Hammersmith and one at Charing Cross Hospital are involved in the ID / Microbiology rotation which passes through Imperial College / Associated hospitals. At Hammersmith, all ID SpRs are Academic Clinical Fellows and 50% of all such Fellowships in ID in the UK are in the Department. In 2006, a new ID / Virology training scheme for SpR's was approved and SpRs will be based across The Trust. Finally, there is a single ID SHO associated with The Hammersmith Campus.
At Hammersmith there is a brand new dedicated ID ward with 9 negative pressure rooms. In addition, there is an extensive referral service throughout the hospital. A similar referral service operates at Charing Cross Hospital and the Infectious Diseases team has a small number of inpatient beds there as well.
Many SHO's and SpR's who undertake a clinical training on the ID unit have subsequently returned and successfully obtained a Research Training Fellowship from a major grant giving body.
More details on the clinical training can be obtained from Dr Frances Sanderson, Clinical Trainer at Charing Cross or Professor Jon Friedland, Head of Department, Infectious Diseases and Immunity.
