Microbicides 2004

The third biennial conference dedicated to microbicides - Microbicides 2004 - took place at the Hilton Metropole Hotel, London, UK between the 28 and 31 March 2004.

Building on the success of the previous conferences held in Washington DC in 2000, and Antwerp in 2002, this conference attracted a large number of delegates and officials from all over the world, all actively working in HIV research and policy.

The conference Chairs are Jonathan Weber (Imperial College London), Janet Darbyshire (Medical Research Council, Clinical Trials Unit) both part of the MRC/DFID Microbicides Development Programme, and Robin Gorna, UK Department for International Development, who have actively supported microbicide research for many years.

The conference provided a forum for reporting novel and innovative work, to provide updates on recent research covering basic, clinical and behavioural science, to present opportunities for knowledge sharing between researchers, public health workers and advocacy organizations.

Some of the topics and themes covered at the conference included:

  • mechanisms and factors affecting sexual transmission of HIV
  • mechanisms of microbicide action and impact on design of new microbicides
  • ethics and standards of care within the context of microbicide trials
  • alternative barrier methods against HIV transmission and their relation to microbicides
  • combinations of microbicides
  • clinical trials - design and data
  • regulatory issues
  • community mobilisation and access – global and regional
  • advances in behavioural and social research.
