Q&A translational medicine

Are students able/encouraged to participate in research projects organised by collaborative parties e.g. pharmaceutical firms?

Yes, this is possible as some of the ongoing/future projects are academic/industry collaborations. A student will be required to discuss his/her project proposals with the course director and coordinator so as to ensure that the project is inline with the objectives of the MRes course and an Imperial College supervisor must oversee the work.

Would this course be appropriate study for an individual with career aspirations in clinical trials research?

It is the ultimate goal of the course to provide training to individuals who wish to pursue a career in clinical research, either in industry or academia. The course intends to develop highly skilled and motivated researchers and cultivate the next generation of physician-scientists involved in the design and execution of conventional and experimental medicine trials. As such, successful completion of the course is likely to enhance opportunities for recruitment by academia/industry institutions beyond traditional organizational boundaries.

Would graduates from this course likely be sought for clinical research roles within industry or more likely go on to study for a PhD and possibly a future career within academia?

Graduates of this course will have an awareness of clinical experimental medicine and translational research which provides an ideal background for following a career in a clinical research environment. The MRes course also provides excellent training to students who wish to progress to PhD studies.
