Professor Shiranee Sriskandan
Professor Shiranee Sriskandan is the lead for the laboratory-based work-stream 2, “network for clinical infection programme within the Centre. This development of a clinical infection and pathogenesis network builds on collaborations with the Centre for Infections within the Health Protection Agency based at Colindale and the close working relationship with the Imperial College Trust Microbiology Laboratories. Working with Dr Kathy Bamford from the Trust and members of the HPA’s Centre for Infections, this work is helping determine the reasons behind observed epidemiological changes by providing rapid research responses to novel challenges encountered in the hospital, community and a national setting.
Specifically the research team, including Debra Smith, Claire Turner, Magdelana Guiera, Matt Percy and Zoe Seager, are identifying the factors affecting bacterial transmission, carriage, and invasiveness to decrease the spread of HCAI. They are also working to identify novel diagnostic tools to detect highly toxigenic pathogens and improving HCAI treatments through research into the clinical pathogenesis of infection. Using molecular or protein signatures, specified virulent strains of MRSA, C. difficile or S. pyogenes will be identified promptly, enabling more rapid interventions in the hospital setting. This work will therefore have an immediate impact on patient safety and care.
Background
Shiranee is Clinical Professor of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine and an ID consultant for the Imperial College Healthcare Trust. Her research addresses the mechanisms by which serious Gram positive pathogens cause disease, examining the interface between pathogen molecular microbiology and host immune response, and builds on considerable clinical experience of severe bacterial sepsis. Work-stream 2, the Network in Clinical Infection is embedded and strongly linked with her Gram Positive research group
