The work centres on the protein kinase cascades activated by major inflammatory stimuli (IL-1, TNF, microbial products and cell stress) and their roles in cellular responses. A major interest is p38 MAP kinase which controls mRNA stability and translation through AU-rich elements present in mRNAs of inflammatory and immune response genes.
MAP Kinase Signalling is controlled by MAP kinase phosphatases (MKP) and corticosteroids may exert anti-imflammatory effects by inducing MKP-1.
