The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, headed by Professor Paul Elliott, is based at the St Mary’s campus and has around 90 staff and PhD students. It runs a joint MSc course in Modern Epidemiology, a Masters in Public Health and has an expanding PhD programme.
Major programmes include:
MRC-HPA Centre for Environment and Health which incorporates:
- Small Area Health Statistics Unit (SAHSU)
- Airwave Health Monitoring study
- INTERMAP study (international cooperative study on macronutrients and blood pressure) supported by the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute
- EPIC (European Commission for the European Prospective Study into Cancer, Chronic Diseases, Nutrition and Lifestyle).
The Department also has a large number of other EC grants as well as substantial funding from the UK Research Councils.
