What is Simulation?

Developed by Medsim-Eagle in the USA, the full-scale life-like mannequin can simulate a wide variety of clinical situations allowing the ultimate in experiential learning.

The Simulation Room is set up to provide the most realistic environment possible without involving real patients.

Anatomically, the simulator provides many highly realistic features, such as a realistic upper airway, full voice capabilities, reactive pupils and eyelids, arm motion, heart and breath sounds, self-ventilating independent lungs and palpable pulses. The anatomical features can be manipulated to produce adverse situations, such as a difficult airway and bronchospasm.

Real drugs, fluids and anaesthetic agents are administered. Complex physiological software models cause the mannequin to mimic appropriate responses to pathology, interventions and drugs.

Training Facilities

The flexibility of the centre makes it ideal for both large group tutorials and small group "hands on" training experience. The facility can simulate any medical situation, making it useful to doctors, nurses, medical students and all allied healthcare professionals.

Examples

  • Anaesthesia Crisis Resource Management (ACRM), during which participants learn the essentials of managing potentially catastrophic situations in a safe educational setting

  • Advanced Life Support

  • Pharmacology and the safe use of drugs

  • Critical situations in all acute care domains
    Scenario

A wide variety of scenarios are designed and set up and then manipulated from the Control Room, situated adjacent to the main Simulation Room. Cameras within the theatre allow recording of an entire scenario. The participants can then review the videotape in the Seminar Room and analyse their own performance. New and novel approaches to your crisis management can be developed under the guidance of a specially trained instructor.

Learning

The Centre provides a high intensity learning environment where a high faculty-to-participant ratio is possible. The videotape playback offers a unique opportunity for learning in a relaxed setting.
