Surgical Education Group

Simulated operating theatre in the Clinical Skills Unit, St. Mary's

The Surgical Education Group (SEG) is led by Dr Roger Kneebone, Clinical Senior Lecturer in Surgical Education. Roger has a background in general surgery, primary care and medical education. The group’s research interests focus around clinical learning at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and across a range of healthcare disciplines. The SEG encourages clinicians of all backgrounds to take part in educational research, and provides support in developing essential skills.

Current work centres on the contextualisation of clinical learning (especially in relation to surgical and procedural skills), and innovative approaches to role-based multiprofessional training. These include high and low-fidelity simulations, team-based learning and the use of virtual reality and other emerging technologies within clinical education.

Close links with colleagues within and beyond the Department of Biosurgery and Surgical Technology are key to the group’s research programme, much of which is essentially multidisciplinary. These include the Department’s Surgical Imaging and Computing and Clinical Safety groups, and Imperial colleagues in Communication and the Centre for Education. Wider collaborations include international exchange programmes within Europe, Australasia and North America.
