Work-stream 2 Network in Clinical Infection
Anticipated Outputs
- New treatment targets in severe CA-MRSA and MSSA disease
- New molecular typing and rapid diagnostics tools for S. aureus.
- New tools for C. difficile & better understanding of recurrent disease
- New approach to outbreak management of S. pyogenes
Work-stream Leaders: Shiranee Sriskandan and Kathy Bamford
Aim: to combine clinical and epidemiological knowledge with fundamental research to deliver improved outcomes in diagnosis and management of Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium difficile, and Streptococcus pyogenes, all of which are significant nosocomial pathogens. Novel diagnostic tools to detect highly pathogenic or toxigenic strains will be developed whilst increasing understanding of the pathogenesis of these infections. As part of this work investigators from CIPM are actively collaborating with colleagues at the WT Sanger Institute to sequence S. pyogenes strains from the major serogroups causing invasive disease in the UK at present, in collaboration with the Health Protection Agency.
