Wellcome Trust – GlaxoSmithKline Translational Medicine Training (TMT) Programme in Imperial College London

2009 applications are accepted on a rolling basis

The TMT Fellowship Programme is designed to train the next generation of clinician scientists in Experimental Medicine. A central theme is the application of the new tools of clinical investigation, particularly clinical imaging, to the evaluation of novel medical interventions in humans. The research will be based in a variety of medical disciplines including neurology, oncology, cardiovascular and metabolic disease, and inflammation. Projects will range from the innovative characterisation of disease phenotypes or validation of potential new drug targets to the development of biomarkers and early proof-of-concept drug studies.

Imperial College London will host up to 4 new Clinical PhD Fellowships per year funded jointly by the Wellcome Trust and GlaxoSmithkline (GSK). The Fellowships are embedded in the Wellcome Trust PhD Programme and will form part of an integrated programme of training in Translational Medicine. The Fellows will be based on the Hammersmith campus and benefit from the strong and internationally renowned academic environment offered at Imperial College, the Wellcome Trust McMichael Centre for Clinical Research and all the resources of the newly completed GSK Clinical Imaging Centre (CIC). The CIC is the UKs best equipped clinical research imaging centre, with two cyclotrons and PET/CT systems, two MRI systems and associated laboratory space in a newly completed research-dedicated facility in the heart of the Hammersmith campus (http://cic.gsk.co.uk/).

Successful candidates, selected by interview, will be able to match a project suitable to their medical career goals from a portfolio of research programmes that will be outlined with internationally-leading investigators at the outset of each year's applications call. Each Fellow will register for 3 years for a higher degree (MPhil/PhD) and have one supervisor from Imperial College and one from GSK. During their tenure in the TMT programme, Fellows will meet regularly with their supervisors, as well as with the other Fellows and be expected to participate in an active seminar series and structured teaching modules developed specifically to meet their needs.
