Professor Elizabeth Simpson, who joined the CSC when it was established in 1994, has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Understanding Hypertension

Chronic high blood pressure is a serious health risk that affects more than 25% of all adults. Until recently, the molecular basis of the disease has not been well-understood. But now, Tim Aitman and his team at the CSC have used next-generation sequencing technology to determine the full genome of the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) – a useful model in studying high blood pressure in humans. This is the first mammalian disease model genome to be sequenced. The study reveals that genetic variance in rat populations, as compared with mouse, more closely matches that observed in humans.
