Double award for Professor Sir Ara Darzi

Professor Sir Ara Darzi, Head of the Division of Surgery, Anaesthetics and Intensive Care, has received the Hamdan Award for medical research excellence and the Fellowship of the City and Guilds of London Institute (FGCI).

Three Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Awards for Medical Sciences are awarded annually in Dubai to honour researchers from around the world who pursue disctinctive medical research that serves the larger interests of humanity. The award foundation also seeks to enhance interactions between scientists from the United Arab Emirates and those from the rest of the world.

Professor Sir Ara Darzi received the Hamdan Award for 2003-4 in the category of Minimally Invasive Surgical Technology.

The FCGI is the highest award given by the Council of the City and Guilds of London Institute, recognising outstanding professional and personal achievement. Fellows are people who have demonstrated excellence in their field, who have gained the respect of their peers and who can be considered role models for their profession.
