Dr Alan Groves
Dr Alan Groves is an MRC Clinician Scientist and Honorary Consultant Neonatologist at Imperial College. He works within the Imaging Sciences group at Hammersmith Hospital, and at the tertiary neonatal unit of Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital.
His principal research interest is in neonatal haemodynamics. In collaboration with physicists, cardiologists and imaging scientists the team have already demonstrated that cardiac MR can be used to obtain high quality images of cardiac function even in preterm infants weighing less than 600 grams. Images can be obtained without sedation or respiratory compensation. BFFE, phase contrast and tissue tagging techniques are all currently undergoing optimisation.
A major focus of his four year MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship (2008-2012) is also to develop ultrasound techniques for the optimal cotside study of the newborn circulation.
His long term aim is to facilitate reductions in mortality and morbidity in newborn infants through improvements in circulatory monitoring and support.
