Mr Barry L Andrews
I am a final year trainee in orthopaedics and trauma surgery, who has taken time out from specialist training to undertake a research programme at Imperial College.
The focus of the work is the development of a new patient-specific, robot assisted, unicondylar knee replacement. In collaboration with Professor Justin Cobb, patient-specific, robot-assisted massive prostheses are also being developed to manage traumatic osteoarticular bone loss.
Additional research work addresses gait-analysis and PROMs.
My desire to pursue my chosen career was a direct result of the excellent teaching provided by the orthopaedic surgeons of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
I relocated to London following a successful Basic Surgical Training rotation, which included a full-time anatomy lecturing and demonstrating job. I was appointed to be Trauma Fellow at The Royal London, which is one of Europe's busiest trauma hospitals: there is a dedicated Helicopter Emergency Service which serves Greater London and beyond. My work during this time included both orchestrating the local orthopaedic response to the London Bombing of 2005 and operating on the many casualties. I helped to share our experience by presenting internationally.
I was delighted to be appointed to the Percival Pott Rotation for Specialist Training in 2006. My interest has grown naturally and definitively to the knee - both arthroplasty and sports surgery - in addition to trauma.
I have completed six months as the lead Specialist Registrar at The Royal London Hospital. This necessitated balancing the often-competing interests of trainees, hospital managers, and consultants within the challenging EWTD timeframe.
Outside of work, I am a keen tennis player and enjoy mountain biking. I also play the piano. If only I could span two octaves!
I aim to undertake fellowships abroad in arthroplasty and sports knee surgery, before returning to the UK to settle into my life as a contented and successful consultant.
