Dr Bao Nguyen
Bao Nguyen is a Cardiothoracic surgery Registrar and Heart Research UK clinical research Fellow at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London.
After graduating in Medicine from Imperial College with first class honours in Pharmacology, he undertook postgraduate training on the Hammersmith Hospitals Basic surgical training rotation and within the London deanery. During this time he obtained a Masters degree in Surgical Sciences from Imperial College and obtained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He commenced higher Cardiothoracic training in Oxford under Professor David Taggart before being appointed to the Southwest Cardiothoracic specialist training programme.
In 2010, Bao joined Dr Paul Evans' group at the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) where his research focuses on Systemic Inflammatory Response to open heart surgery. He uses flow cytometric analysis to investigate the role of specific factors important in the intra-cellular signalling cascades of pro- and anti-inflammatory pathways. This is combined with the cantharadin skin blister leukocyte trafficking system to precisely understand the inflammatory response. These techniques are currently being utilised in a clinical trial in collaboration with Mr Jon Anderson and Professor Gianni Angelini to assess the body’s response to conventional, off-pump and miniaturised cardiopulmonary bypass systems.
