Dr Carsten Bantel is a HEFC-E Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London and an Honorary Consultant in Anaesthetics & Pain Medicine at Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust. In his clinical role he is mainly responsible for leading the acute pain service and as such involved in the post-operative care of patients.
Dr Bantel is a graduate from Hanover Medical School, Hanover, Germany, from which he received an MD (Dr med.) in 1996. Dr Bantel started his career in Anaesthetics and Pain Medicine at the Westfaelische Wilhelms-University in Muenster, Germany (Director: Professor H. van Aken). In 1999 he moved to North Carolina, USA, to become a postdoctoral fellow in Professor J.C. Eisenach’s Pain Mechanisms Laboratory at Wake Forest University. From 2004 to 2007 Dr Bantel was a Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London, Department of Anaesthetics (Director: Professor M. Maze). Here, under supervision of Professor Maze and Dr S. Trapp, he successfully characterised the role of ATP-sensitive K+ channels in anaesthetic preconditioning. For this work he received a PhD from Imperial College in 2009.
Dr Bantel is a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and from its Faculty of Pain Medicine.
After winning a HEFC-E grant in 2010 Dr Bantel was appointed Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London and Honorary Consultant at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital in 2011.
As a clinical academic Dr Bantel’s aim is to provide a link in the increasing gap between basic science and clinical research. He is especially interested in acute pain and here in the discovery of biomarkers and the development of advanced diagnostic tools. Dr Bantel is further interested in the consequences of pain on organ functions and on ways to predict and possibly influence the underlying pathomechanisms.
