Dr Cristina Canova

Dr Cristina Canova is a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in both the Respiratory Epidemiology and Public Heath Group and the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Group at NHLI. She joined NHLI in June 2010 as part of the MRC-HPA Centre for Environment and Health.

Dr Canova graduated in Statistics, Demography and Social Sciences at the University of Padua (Italy) in 2002 and then worked as a researcher in medical statistics and epidemiology at the Department of Environmental Medicine and Public Health at Padua University. Her PhD  (“Role of genetic and environmental factors in head and neck cancer”) was awarded in 2007, and included a placement at  the International Agency of Research on Cancer in Lyon. Prior to joining NHLI she had conducted studies on the role of air pollution exposure on human health, with a particular focus on health effects in those with asthma and in those with cardiac disease. She has extensive experience in the development, conduct and coordination of epidemiological studies and in the analysis of epidemiological data.

Her current research is related to the investigation of cardio-respiratory effects of ambient air pollution, in particular the role of particulate pollutants in exacerbations of asthma and COPD. She also has an interest in the health effects of exposure to welding fumes in the occupational environment and carbon monoxide in the indoor and outdoor environment.
