Dr Charalambos Michaeloudes
Dr Charalambos Michaeloudes is a Research Associate in the Experimental Studies Group, Airway Disease Section of the National Heart and Lung Institute.
Charalambos studied Medical Biochemistry as an undergraduate at King’s College London. Following the completion of his studies in 2003 he spent one year as a research technician at King’s College London, School of Health and Life Sciences, working on the development of immunoassays for analysis of drugs of abuse, antibiotics and pesticides in human samples. In 2004 he undertook an MSc course in Molecular Life Sciences Research from which he graduated with Distinction.
Pursuing his interest in medical research he carried out his PhD training with Professor Kian Fan Chung at the National Heart and Lung Institute, studying the role of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β in the regulation of oxidant-antioxidant enzyme balance in airway smooth muscle cells. Following the completion of his PhD studies in 2009, Charalambos remained in Professor Chung’s group as a research associate investigating the signalling pathways underlying the modulation of antioxidant responses by TGF-β in airway smooth muscle cells. In addition, he is studying the regulation of oxidant and antioxidant mechanisms in airway smooth muscle cells from patients with asthma and chronic obstructive airway disease (COPD).
Charalambos has presented his work in several international and local meetings. He has received a European Respiratory Society (ERS) Young Scientist Sponsorship and an Asthma UK Travel Award to attend the ERS Annual Congress 2010 in Barcelona.
Charalambos’s research interests lie in airway smooth muscle cell biology. In particular, he is interested in the role of reactive oxygen species in the induction of abnormal airway smooth muscle function in asthma and COPD.
