Dr Fu Siong Ng
Dr Fu Siong Ng is a Cardiology Specialist Registrar and Clinical Research Fellow at the National Heart and Lung Institute. He is currently on a British Heart Foundation Travel Fellowship to the US, and is carrying out post-doctoral research in the laboratory of Prof Igor Efimov at Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr Ng studied Medicine as an undergraduate at St. George’s, University of London between 1997 and 2003. He obtained a First Class (Honours) BSc degree in Medical Sciences & Clinical Pharmacology, having ranked top in his year in multiple medical school examinations, and then obtained Distinctions at his Final Medicine & Surgery (MBBS) Examinations. Dr Ng proceeded to train as a junior medical doctor in London, and was appointed to the Cardiology Specialist Training Programme in 2007.
For his PhD research, Dr Ng conducted studies into the effects of gap junction modulation on myocardial structure and function and ventricular arrhythmogenesis in the laboratory of Prof Nicholas Peters, where he utilised a combination of ex vivo and in vivo models of ischaemia, reperfusion and infarction, and electrophysiological techniques such as optical mapping to investigate electrical impulse propagation in intact myocardial tissue. His current research interests include:
- Modification of infarct scar morphology to modify post-infarction arrhythmia susceptibility
- Identification of novel determinants of post-infarction ventricular arrhythmias
- Investigation of the effects of gap junction modulation
- Investigation of electrical alternans during transition to arrhythmias
Some of Dr Ng's most recent academic awards include the European Cardiac Arrhythmia Society Best Oral Abstract Prize 2011 (2nd Prize), the Medical Research Society Raftery Prize in Cardiovascular Sciences 2011 (Winner), the British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence Poster Prize 2010 (1st Prize), the Royal Society of Medicine President's Medal 2010 (2nd Prize), the Imperial College Cardiovascular Technology Network Poster Prize 2010 (1st Prize), the British Cardiovascular Society Young Investigators Prize 2010 (Runner-Up) and the Heart Rhythm Congress Young Investigators Prize 2009 (Winner). In addition to his research and clinical activities, Dr Ng teaches regularly on postgraduate clinical medicine courses and is also responsible for supervision of BSc, MRes and PhD research projects.
