My research interests are in using mathematical modelling as a tool to quantify the potential impact of prevention interventions on HIV transmission in different settings in sub-Saharan Africa. The main focus of my current work is on the epidemiological impact and cost-effectiveness of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis.

The role of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis in combination HIV prevention

As a possible public health intervention, PrEP has created much optimism as it is a biomedical intervention which can be female controlled and may play a unique role within existing HIV prevention programmes. Equally, PrEP has raised many concerns which include the ethics of giving limited drugs to uninfected individuals in the context of unmet need for treatment for infected individuals and the cost-effectiveness of such an intervention. I work with Dr. Timothy Hallett and others to estimate the potential population-level impact of different PrEP interventions and to investigate its potential role within combination HIV prevention.

Background

I completed my MSc in Modern Epidemiology in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at Imperial College. During my PhD I worked with the Manicaland HIV/STI prevention project in Zimbabwe. My work focused on analysing behavioural data and the uptake of testing for HIV in addition to using statistical modelling to analyse the impact of testing and counselling for HIV on individuals risk behaviour.

Teaching

I teach on the BSc in Global Health, on the epidemiology module for the BSc in Biology and Biochemistry and on Imperial College’s professional short course ‘Introduction to mathematical Models of the Epidemiology & Control of Infectious Diseases’.
