Miss Liang Yew-Booth
Liang Yew-Booth graduated from University College London in 2008 with a BSc (Hons) in Physiology. Following this, she was awarded a 1+3 year PhD studentship from the Centre for Integrative Mammalian Physiology and Pharmacology at Imperial College. During her MRes (in Integrative Mammalian Biology) she undertook a placement at Pfizer (Sandwich, Kent). This project investigated a virally exacerbated house dust mite model of asthma.
Liang is now a PhD student in the Respiratory Pharmacology group in the National Heart and Lung Institute investigating the enzyme AMP-activated kinase (AMPK) and a link between aerobic capacity and airway disease, namely chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It has been hypothesised that differences in susceptibility to developing COPD within smokers is due to differences in aerobic capacity. Due to the role of AMPK as a key regulator of aerobic metabolism and exercise capacity, her project aims to characterise AMPK pathways in relation to lung inflammation and disease with the hope that a new target for the treatment of airway disease will be identified.
Liang is also the student representative on the British Pharmacological Society's Women in Pharmacology committee.
