Dr Mark Griffiths

Honorary Reader in Critical Care Medicine and Deputy Head of the Unit of Critical Care at the National Heart and Lung Institute and Consultant Physician at Royal Brompton Hospital, London. Having qualified at London University in 1987, he was appointed to his present post in 2001.

He is the lead of the Acute Respiratory Failure consortium of the NIHR Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit, Director of Education and co-lead for the Analytical Chemistry and Ex vivo lung perfusion core facilities. Clinical interests include ARDS, human models of acute lung injury and extra-corporeal gas exchange techniques.

His research is focussed on cellular and molecular mechanisms of acute lung injury and research into biomarkers for these diseases. Current, focus of research is the effect of mechanical forces on lung injury and repair; current models include cellular stretch, in vivo murine ventilator-induced lung injury and clinical hyperinflation during one-lung ventilation. He is involved in multidisciplinary translational research which integrates basic science with clinical studies, thereby providing novel insights into parenchymal lung diseases.
