Mr. M. Jawad Naushahi, B.Med.Sci. (Hons.), B.M., B.S., L.L.M., M.R.C.S. Ed. (U.K.)
Jawad Naushahi studied medicine (B.Med.Sci. (Hons.), B.M., B.S.) at the University of Nottingham Medical School, 1999 – 2004 (Prof. T. Masud & Prof. T. Hope). During his time at University he won several scholarships and prizes including ERASMUS/Socrates Scholarship (for intercalated B.Med.Sci. (Hons.) research at the University Medical Centre, The University of Nijmegen, Netherlands (Prof. C. van Weel & Prof. T. Avery)), The Royal Society of Medicine Student Research Paper & Poster Presentation Prize Competition (runner-up), MacLoghlin & Morris Scholarship, The Royal College of Surgeons of England (for Special Study Module in Neurosurgery, Carlo Besta, Italian National Institute of Neurosciences, Milan, Italy (Prof. G. Broggi & Prof. A. Franzini)), Nottingham Medico-Chirurgical Society Scholarship (for Elective in Neurosurgery, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, National Institute of Neurosciences & The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan (Prof. R. Jooma & Dr. S. Bashir, respectively)) and The University of Nottingham Inter-hall Hockey Championships, 1999 – 2000. Jawad was also appointed Sports Secretary to Rutland Hall, University of Nottingham, 2000 - 2001.
He went on to complete his Basic Surgical Training, including Specialty Trainee appointments at The Departments of Clinical Neurosciences, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh (Prof. I. Whittle) and John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford (Prof. T. Aziz). Jawad was admitted as a Member of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (M.R.C.S. Ed.) in 2007 and is now an Medical Research Council, UK (MRC) Clinical Research Fellow in Functional Neurosurgery in The Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London / Charing Cross Hospital (Mr. D. Nandi), within the Imperial College Neuromodulation Group (ICNG). Jawad has also been appointed Specialty Trainee in Neurosurgery (Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, 2012 - ).
His clinical and research interests lie in the fascinating field of Stereotactic Functional Neurosurgery (Deep Brain Stimulation, DBS) and the neurophysiology of movement disorders (Parkinson's disease, PD). Jawad and the Imperial College Neuromodulation Group (ICNG) have been awarded an Medical Research Council, UK (MRC) Research Grant (2008 – 2011) to perform a clinical study (Ph.D.) to determine the relative advantage pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN, a brainstem nucleus) DBS offers over and above standard subthalamic nucleus (STN) DBS and medical treatment of PD, especially in controlling the axial motor symptoms of postural dysfunction and gait problems. This could help in the treatment of these particularly difficult and debilitating problems of some patients with PD. The MRC award is further supplemented by an award from the Medtronic European Research Board that will provide some free hardware for the study for clinical use.
