I am a Research Associate at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering in the Department of Surgery and Cancer. My research activities are centred around the development of optical technologies that can be used in laparoscopic surgery.
My current projects fall under the following headings:
- Simultaneous 3D and multispectral imaging
- Structured lighting for deformation recovery
- Miniature endoscopic probe design
- Liquid lens-based optics for endoscopes
Previous work has involved the development of an indentation device to detect changes in the skin's mechanical properties using an indentor and optical tracking system. Other work on the skin included monitoring red blood cell concentration using polarisation spectroscopy and following the response of the microcirculation to compression and irritation.
I am a graduate of the University of Limerick in Ireland, where I received my BSc in Applied Physics, followed by a PhD in 2009.
