Dr Nicholas S Kirkby
Nick is currently working as a Postdoctoral Research Associate within the Cardiothoracic Pharmacology group, National Heart and Lung Institute.
Nick performed his undergraduate training at the University of Edinburgh where he received BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology in 2005. He remained in Edinburgh to peruse a PhD in the laboratory of Prof. David Webb, studying the roles of the endothelium-derived substances, particularly endothelin-1, in the response to vascular injury.
After the successful completion of his PhD in 2009, Nick took up his current position working with Prof. Jane Mitchell at the National Heart and Lung Institute, in collaboration with Prof. Tim Warner at the William Harvey Research Institute. In this capacity, he is currently investigating the role of cyclco-oxygenase enzymes and their products in vascular function and disease pathogenesis. In particular, he is interested in how the balance between prostanoids produced by platelets and endothelial cells might regulate thrombotic disease and how this is modified by widely used cyclo-oxygenase inhibitors and anti-platelet therapies.
