Professor Paul Elliott

Professor Paul Elliott, MBBS, PhD, FMedSci, trained in clinical medicine and epidemiology as a Wellcome Trust Clinical Fellow at St Mary's Hospital London and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He was lecturer, then senior lecturer and reader in epidemiology before becoming Head of the Environmental Epidemiology Unit at LSHTM 1990-95. He moved to Imperial College in 1995 when he was appointed to the Chair in Epidemiology and Public Health Medicine and Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. He also holds positions as Honorary Consultant in Public Health Medicine with the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Kensington & Chelsea PCT.

Main research interests :
Environmental epidemiology and small-area health statistics; Genetic and molecular epidemiology, gene-environment interactions, eg, in relation to cardiovascular disease;
Nutritional epidemiology, eg, role of dietary factors in the epidemiology of high blood pressure;
Conduct and design of large-scale, prospective population cohort studies; Effects of non-ionising radiation on long-term health, eg, mobile phones, TETRA system; Biobank studies.

Major research programmes :

• Director of the MRC-HPA Centre for Environment and Health. Aim is to create a centre for excellence in research and training, integrating research in environmental epidemiology, exposure assessment, air and water pollution, biomarkers and environmental toxicology. The Centre includes the Small Area Health Statistics (SAHSU) Unit.
• PI of the London Coordinating Centre of the INTERMAP international collaborative study on macro- and micro-nutrients and blood pressure including metabonomic analyses of urine samples (in collaboration with Prof Nicholson of Biomolecular Medicine).
• PI of the Airwave health monitoring study of long-term health of police officers in relation to use of the TETRA communication system.
• PI of the COSMOS international cohort study of mobile phone use and health, which aims to study 200,000 mobile phone users (90,000 from UK) and their long-term health.
• Collaborating with Prof Kooner and colleagues on the LOLIPOP (London Life Sciences Prospective Population) cohort study and with Prof Jarvelin on NFBC (Northern Finland Birth Cohort) studies.
• PI of the UK Biobank Regional Collaborating Centre working as Chair of the UKB Enhancement Sub Group (on potential for enhancement of physical measurements and samples). 

Teaching: Undergraduate students on the Epidemiology in Practice course and the BMedSci epidemiology course. Postgraduate students on the MSc in Modern Epidemiology and the Masters in Public Health. Iupervision of 3 PhD students.
