Dr Peter Karayiannis
Peter Karayiannis is Reader of Molecular Virology, in the section of Hepatology and Gastroenterology, Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Imperial College and Honorary Consultant in the Robert Hesketh Antiviral Unit, within the Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
Peter is a scientist with a background in Medical Microbiology and special interests in the molecular biology of the hepatitis viruses. He heads a small group of researchers who are investigating the role of genomic mutations in relation to disease progression, vaccine escape and antiviral resistance. He is also involved with the laboratory investigations that are required in monitoring efficacy of drugs in clinical trials performed within the Robert Hesketh antiviral unit. He is the author of more than 200 papers, reviews and chapters that appeared in peer reviewed journals and books over the years.
Peter is European Editor of the Journal of Viral Hepatitis and editorial board member of the Journal of Hepatology and World Journal of Gastroenterology.
Finally, Peter is joint course Director for the BSc in Hepatology and Gastroenterology and course Tutor for the MSc in the Molecular Biology and Pathology of Viruses. As a result of his teaching activities he received a Rector’s Award for “Excellence in Teaching” for 2009.
