Dr Robert J Boyle

Clinical Senior Lecturer in Paediatric Allergy, St Mary's Campus.

Dr Boyle was appointed as NIHR Clinical Lecturer, and then Clinical Senior Lecturer in Paediatric Allergy at Imperial College London from 2007. Prior to this he trained in Paediatric Allergy and Immunology at the Royal Children's Hospital and Melbourne University, Australia where his PhD investigated the immune effects of probiotic bacteria used for preventing eczema.

His main research focus is the primary prevention of allergic disease in childhood, with current projects investigating the role of probiotics, prebiotics and vitamin D. Other areas of active research are systematic reviews in allergy, the investigation of a new environmental control device (Protexo) for treating allergic airways disease, finding the best device for delivery of adrenaline in the treatment of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), and understanding the mechanisms underlying food allergic reactions.

Dr Boyle was awarded the highest mark in the inaugural European Allergy Examination in 2008. He is an editor for the Cochrane Skin Group and Associate Editor for Clinical and Experimental Allergy. He has been awarded over £1 million of research funding during his time at Imperial College London, and has been invited to speak at several international conferences.
