Dr Sergio Coda

Sergio Coda is a Clinical Research Fellow in the Division of Experimental Medicine, working within the Departments of Physics, Histopathology, Gastroenterology and the Endoscopy service at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

Research interests are based around the development of novel endoscopic techniques including the application of Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging (FLIM) for label-free contrast of gastrointestinal (GI) disease. His research is essentially about translating FLIM from the bench to in vivo clinical application and, as one of the clinicians of the Photonics Group, he contributes to help design and implement clinically viable FLIM instruments and protocols and to evaluate their performance.  He also aims to address the open question of the origin of the malignancy-associated lifetime contrast that has been observed ex vivo but which has never been confirmed in vivo.

He received his Medical Degree in 2001 from “La Sapienza” University of Rome, Italy, and completed in 2007 his Specialty training in General Surgery with a specific commitment to GI endoscopy. He then pursued advanced training in therapeutic endoscopy, especially for endoscopic resection of GI cancers, at National Cancer Center Hospital of Tokyo, Japan. He is one of the pioneers of the Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) technique in Europe.
