Tom Lumbers is a Cardiology Specialist Registrar and Clinical Research Fellow at Imperial College London.
After graduating in medicine from Cambridge University with double distinction, he undertook postgraduate medical training at Hammersmith Hospital and University Hospital of Geneva, Switzerland.
In 2009, Tom joined Professor Michael Schneider's group at the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) where his research focuses on the transcriptional networks and signaling pathways that regulate the progenitor pool in the adult heart. He uses post-transcriptional gene silencing to investigate the role of specific factors in the transcriptional machinery promoting self-renewal and inhibiting differentiation. He is also using robotic and combinatorial cell culture to develop high efficiency in vitro differentiation protocols to uncover salient physiological signaling pathways, and to establish a robust model system for further study of transcriptional control.
