Research in the Strategic Theme of Cancer is an important research priority for Imperial College London’s Faculty of Medicine. The Faculty houses several large cancer research units with diverse funding sources.
As a Strategic Theme for focused development, Cancer has several key research strengths, both basic and clinical. These include gynaecological oncology, breast cancer, surgical oncology, tumour virology and lung cancer.
A major underlying research strength is the molecular biology of cancer. Various aspects of molecular imaging are also of importance. Recent achievements include the elucidation of the structure and mechanism of the multi-drug resistance P-glycoprotein.
