Acute Lung Injury

Acute lung injury (ALI) is a syndrome that can develop as a consequence of virtually any pulmonary insult, ranging from influenza/pneumonia and sepsis to blood transfusion and lung transplant. Mortality can be as high as 40-50% if the lung injury becomes severe, and ALI is associated with as many deaths in the UK as breast cancer or AIDS.  There is currently no treatment, only supportive therapy in the Intensive Care Unit.

We are interested in understanding the pathobiology of ALI, with a particular emphasis on the involvement of the inflammatory response. Our research projects are currently focussed on utilising in vivo models of disease to explore the mechanisms by which inflammatory cells and mediators interact to influence physiology.  Alongside in vitro cell biology techniques and clinical collaborations, we hope to identify targets that one day may reduce ALI morbidity and mortality.
