We are now closed for applications for the 2012 intake. We will be accepting applications for the 2013 intake next October/November.
Who can apply?
Applicants are assessed on:
- Academic excellence
- Evidence of an interest in research (research projects, publications arising, presentations)
- Interest in a research area
- Future career plans that show thought has been given to how the candidate will develop a career in their chosen area of clinical research.
Applicants should have demonstrated the potential to pursue a career as an academic clinician. It is anticipated that many applicants will have already commenced their specialist training but this is not essential.
Eligibility requirements
- Applicants must hold General Medical Council registration, or be eligible for GMC registration.
- Applicants must be currently in training, and have completed a minimum of 2 years of clinical practice by August of the year applying. Candidates should not normally be more than ten years from the date of their first medical qualification.
- Applicants should have a relevant connection to the European Economic Area (EEA) as either a UK/EEA national, or a non-EEA national who has completed their degree in a university in the UK or Republic of Ireland (ROI), or a non-EEA national who has worked in a UK or ROI university, hospital or inistitution for at least a continuous three year period. What funding does the programme provide?
- A clinical salary
- Research expenses
- Contribution towards travel
- Contribution towards general training costs.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview. The panel will include the Programme Director and Deputy Director and Theme Leaders. Five candidates will be selected to join the Clinical PhD programme, and the definitive selection of supervisors and projects will take place in the first term of the programme.
