Immunology short course

Introduction: A Course for Clinicians and Scientists

For over 20 years, the Department of Immunology has run a short course providing clinicians and scientists with a broad understanding of the complex field of Immunology and an insight into the most recent advances in both scientific and clinical immunological research.  Run over three days, this course covers the development of the immune system and how it works in physiological and pathological situations.  Clinical sessions e.g. Hepatitis by Prof. Mark R. Thursz (Short Course 2006), designed to show the applications of this knowledge in the clinic, are intermingled with basic science sessions, thus the course attracts junior and senior doctors as well as people with non-clinical backgrounds working both in academia and industry.  People have attended the course early in their career to gain specialist expertise for the first time, or to prepare themselves for research.  Others have used it as a refresher or to help them move between fields of interest in their career.  Finally, a few have just come along because it is fun!

The course benefits from excellent teaching provided by members of the Faculty of Medicine who have always received extremely good feedback.  Indeed, many hear of the course through word of mouth and attend because of the course’s good reputation.  We anticipate and look forward to welcoming large numbers onto this course every year.
