Faculty of Medicine

Work experience for secondary school students

Work experience for potential medical students should give them a realistic understanding of what is involved in a career in medicine and thus be a sound basis upon which to decide whether such a career would suit them. Imperial is unlikely to offer places to candidates who have not gained such an understanding. Candidates may also be asked to provide written documentation by way of evidence in suppoprt of their most recent and/or substantial work experience.

However, we appreciate that it can be difficult to obtain work experience in hospitals and GP surgeries, particularly without the help of your school or a medically qualified friend or relative. If this is your situation, we recommend you look for experience as a care assistant or volunteer in a nursing or residential home, or as a volunteer in a hospital or other community establishment. Similarly, although we would like to see a sustained commitment, we understand that this is not always possible. You should expect the interview panel to explore what you have gained from your work experience.

All trusts will require participants to have:

  1. Health clearance (including TB and Hepatitis C vaccination for some placements)
  2. CRB clearance
  3. Appropriate identification (e.g. birth certificate)
  4. Parental permission if under 18 years old
  5. A reference from your school

This work experience is for prospective candidates only:

Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals, Surrey

(Please note that these places are limited to students living in Surrey)
