Assessment

Students are provided with guidance concerning the examinations and assessments they are required to complete in the Course and Year Guides issued at the start of the year, the academic regulations and examination regulations. These provide detailed information about the length, type and format of the examinations and any associated examination procedures, such as those for submitting extenuating circumstances.

A range of assessment techniques are used across the course as required by the different aspects of the curriculum. Developing, agreeing and implementing assessment is undertaken through the Examination Sub-Boards. This assessment is approved through the Education Committee and ratified by the Medical Studies Committee and Senate. Visiting Examiners review assessments prior to use, and after they have been used, to ensure that they meet Imperial College and national standards. Visiting Examiners are explicitly asked to compare the assessment load with other institutions to ensure assessment setting procedures are comparable.

The Examination Sub-Boards review assessments annually and ensure they remain valid and meet the requirements of the course. Changes are approved through the Education Committee, Medical Studies Committee and Senate as required.

The Faculty of Medicine promotes the understanding of the theory and practice of assessment and implementation through College courses including formal training and the CASLAT programme. There are also presentations/workshops on pertinent issues through the Education Committee.
