.
Hard copies of the Course and Year guides are given to students at the start of each year. These Course and Year guides contain detailed information about the skills, knowledge and attitudes expected of students throughout the programme and are available on the Undergraduate Medicine Teaching Intranet pages (password protected). The guides contain sections on personal and professional attitudes and behaviour as well as specific learning aims and objectives for the different parts of the course and specialty attachments.
Different teaching and learning styles are adopted throughout the course: lecture programmes, seminars, tutorials, practicals, debates, coursework, demonstrations using patients, role-play, computer-based work (including interactive modules and other on-line resources), student presentations, directed and independent self-study, clinical skills teaching, simulator sessions, Problem Based Learning, essay writing and case studies.
Students have several elements of choice within the course, including the BSc, Speciality Choice Modules, Professional Work Experience and an elective period. Although there are no optional elements within Years 1, 2, 3 and 5, students are actively encouraged to extend their investigations beyond the core curriculum and develop their interests throughout the programme.
BSc: Students are able to select from 10 different BSc courses. Within nine of these courses (the exception being the BSc course Medical Sciences with Management), the students take three 5-week taught modules (Part B) followed by two 5-week modules for which the students can choose between undertaking a research project (lab-based, clinical or library) or one of three specialist courses - Medical Humanities, History of Medicine and Global and Environmental Health.
Speciality Choice Module: The Specialty Choice Module in Year 6 offers students an opportunity to spend a three-week clinical attachment in a specialty area chosen from 53 modules offered by consultants at sites linked to Imperial College and external sites. These allow students to develop further in-depth experience within specialties already taught within the programme or to broaden their experience in a new area.
Professional Work Experience: Students undertake two Professional Work Experience placements during Year 6. One of these placements is in Medicine, one in Surgery. One of these will be based at an acute Trust (non-residential) and one at a district general hospital (DGH) (usually residential). Students are able to opt for any combination of Surgery/Medicine and acute/DGH from a range of 64 placements.
