Identification of students with difficulties
a) Attendance: certain teaching events are monitored for attendance, e.g. tutorials and clinical attachments. Poor attendance records are reported to the Undergraduate Medicine Office (UMO) which informs Personal/ Clinical Tutors to follow up with the student concerned.
b) Assessment and Examinations: All examination results in the first two years are sent to the Personal Tutors who are expected to follow up those of their tutees who perform poorly. Poor clinical assessments are sent to Clinical Tutors who are expected to follow up and report back to the Undergraduate Medicine Office. As a fail safe, if either of the above does not happen, the UMO informs the Student Welfare Senior Tutors who follow up and report back to the UMO. These procedures highlight many cases of illness and other personal problems, which are then dealt with by the College welfare services or by the Senior Tutors.
c) Other: Students are encouraged to let their Personal/Clinical Tutor or the Senior Tutors know of personal problems that may affect their ability to study adequately. The regular Tutor:tutee meetings frequently uncover personal problems.
d) Student Progress Group: A student's case may need to be referred to the Student Progress Group to ensure the appropriate support and guidance is made available.
The support mechanisms are monitored most directly by the Student Welfare Committee, which has a large student involvement. This reports to and is in turn monitored by the Medical Studies Committee. The support mechanisms are also monitored through the Rector's Committee on Student Welfare.
