Faculty of Medicine

Health and Safety

In Year 1 all students are issued with a copy of the Student Health and Conduct document from the General Medical Council. A copy of this can be downloaded from the General Medical Council website.

Health and Safety Inductions

All students receive a health and safety induction programme in their first week of study. This induction includes a Health and Safety Lecture and an appointment with Occupational Health. Laboratory health and safety information is also listed in Year Guides and clinical log books which students are issued with at the start of the year. Copies of Year Guides and clinical log books are also available on the Undergraduate Medicine Teaching Intranet (password protected).

Health and safety inductions carried out at Trust and General Practice placement sites are the responsibility of the appropriate Trusts and General Practices as laid out in their Service Increment For Teaching (SIFT) contract and the General Practice SIFT contract. Induction sessions are delivered by Trust representatives.

Information is also made widely available to medical students by the College Occupational Health Service.

Management of Health and Safety Policies and accident reporting

The Head of Learning Resources is responsible for ensuring that, for Faculty owned teaching space, the infrastructure and equipment are maintained to the appropriate levels, and in accordance with College Health & Safety policies.

Information concerning College Health and Safety policies are channelled through the Head of Learning Resources to the Director of Clinical Studies Committee. This ensures that any changes are communicated to the relevant Trusts.

If a student has an accident within the College an accident report form must be submitted and returned to the College Safety Unit.

If a student is involved in an accident on a Trust site, it is the responsibility of the Safety Officer for that site to resolve the situation and send a completed accident report form to Imperial College’s Occupational Health department. The College Occupational Health department informs the Technical Co-ordinator (Teaching) for Undergraduate Medicine who is responsible for keeping these forms centrally to provide an overview of the incidents across the Trusts. An annual audit of these safety procedures is now in place.
