This unit is recognized internationally for its work on structure of the heart, normal and abnormal, from gross anatomy to immunocytochemistry covering the entire age spectrum from the fetus to the adult. Its role is to further understanding of structural heart disease through education, research and clinical service.

Leon Gerlis Museum of Cardiac Pathology and Morphology — we created this museum in 2003. The museum is open to visiting health professionals by appointment (Morphology@rbht.nhs.uk)


Our main areas of current research are:

  • Congenital heart disease
    • transcatheter interventions
    • correlates with imaging
    • fetal diagnosis
    • protein distribution in specific lesions
    • remodelling with age
    • remodelling after surgical repair
  • Cardiac conduction system
    • sudden death
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
    • anatomical features in atrial fibrillation
    • correlates with electrophysiologic mapping
  • Developmental anatomy
    • components of obstructive lesions

Education: In addition to undergraduate teaching, we run an extensive annual programme of 6 to 9 short courses for postgraduate doctors and allied health professionals with credits for continuing professional development (CPD). Courses include Cardiac Morphology, Echocardiography of Congenital Heart Disease, Fetal Cardiology and Cardiovascular Pathology.
