Premature Coronary heart disease
Professor Jaspal Kooner, Principal Investigator
The programme investigates the aetiological basis of premature coronary heart disease (CHD) in UK Indian Asians and Northern Europeans. We have established a unique infrastructure using basic, clinical and population science approaches to identify novel risk factors for CHD in these groups. The London Life Sciences Prospective Population Cohort (LOLIPOP) Study of 24,000 participants is aimed at identifying genetic and environmental factors underlying increased rates of CHD, obesity, diabetes, and renal failure in Indian Asians compared to Northern Europeans. In addition to the cohort study, this programme has additional substudy platforms and collaborations at local, national and international levels which include; i. LOLIPOP Genomics (collaboration with Imperial College, Sanger Centre, Perlegen Sciences USA); ii. LOLIPOP Atherosclerosis (West London Hospitals, Imperial College; iii. LOLIPOP Renal (Hammersmith Hospital, Imperial College); iv. LOLIPOP Psychosocial (Ealing Hospital, University College London).
